PM Advances Energy Shift Economic Pivot

Prime Minister The Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew is leveraging high-level European Union partnerships to accelerate St. Kitts and Nevis’ transition to renewable energy and reduce economic dependence on the Citizenship by Investment Program. The Prime Minister held extensive discussions in Brussels with EU officials, private sector leaders, and international financiers focused on advancing geothermal development, clean energy infrastructure, and strategic economic diversification.

The Federation’s strategy centers on investing in tourism, agriculture, technology, and sustainable energy to build a more resilient economy. During meetings with leading European companies and financiers, Drew explored concrete opportunities for collaboration on geothermal energy development, energy interconnection, financing mechanisms, and innovative technologies that can support the Federation’s transition to cleaner, more affordable, and more reliable energy.

European Commissioner Magnus Brunner and Salvador Pinto da França, Adviser for Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean in the Cabinet of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, engaged Drew on areas of mutual interest and deeper collaboration. Drew emphasized the Federation’s commitment to strengthening the Citizenship by Investment Program through enhanced security measures and regulatory reforms, while using revenues from that program to fund diversification efforts across multiple economic sectors.

During a working lunch with senior EU officials, discussions centered on renewable energy development, geothermal opportunities, regional air connectivity, cybersecurity, and public sector digitalization. The talks reflected St. Kitts and Nevis’ position within CARICOM and its commitment to the broader Caribbean-European partnership framework. Participants included EU Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Fiona Ramsey, Italian Foreign Ministry officials, and representatives from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Partnerships.

The engagement underscored both sides’ shared commitment to fostering innovation, sustainable development, and economic resilience. Drew also met with Ireland’s Ambassador to Belgium, exploring enhanced cooperation on issues impacting Small Island Developing States, climate resilience, and international partnerships. These meetings form part of the Government’s broader effort to build strategic international partnerships that strengthen energy security, drive economic growth, and support the Sustainable Island State Agenda. Officials said the Federation expects concrete partnerships and financing mechanisms to emerge from the Brussels engagements in coming months.
