BASSETERRE (SKNIS): Prime Minister and Minister of Health, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nikisha Hazel on her appointment as the new Director of Institutional Nursing Services, describing her elevation to the post as a fitting recognition of a career marked by service.
Speaking at the official sashing ceremony on Monday, July 13, 2026, at the JNF General Hospital, Prime Minister Drew said the occasion represented far more than the ceremonial conferral of a sash.
“This moment represents far more than the sashing of a nurse, a new matron, a new director. It is a recognition of a journey defined by service, professional growth, perseverance, and a deep commitment to the noble profession of nursing,” Dr. Drew stated.
Ms. Hazel brings to the position 27 years of dedicated service in healthcare and a distinguished record of leadership in nursing and public health.
“She is one of you. She is one of us,” Prime Minister Drew said, noting that Ms. Hazel’s professional journey is a powerful reminder of the exceptional talent, ability, and leadership potential that exists within the Federation’s healthcare system.
Reflecting on his meeting with Ms. Hazel during the selection process, the prime minister said he was encouraged by her thoughtful perspectives, enthusiasm, and clear sense of purpose.
“She shared perspectives and ideas that reflected thought, purpose, and a clear appreciation of the responsibilities that accompany leadership,” he said. “I left our discussion encouraged by her enthusiasm, the clarity of her thinking, and her desire to contribute meaningfully to the continued advancement of nursing and healthcare in our Federation.”
As Ms. Hazel assumes her new responsibilities, Prime Minister Drew encouraged her to continue leading with integrity, compassion, and courage; to remain open to new ideas and innovation; and to draw upon the experience and expertise of those she serves and leads.
“Demand excellence, but always remember that at the very heart of healthcare is the dignity and humanity of every patient entrusted to our care,” he said.
The sashing ceremony was attended by senior government officials, including the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Curtis Martin, Principal Nursing Officer, Dr. Rondalyn Dennis-Bradshaw and the new Director of Health Institutions, Gardenia Destang-Richardson.
