PM Drew Mobilizes Support for Students Abroad

BASSETERRE – Prime Minister The Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew has established direct communication channels to protect St. Kitts and Nevis students in Jamaica as Tropical Storm Melissa threatens to become a major hurricane.

The Prime Minister confirmed he has been in contact with Jamaican Prime Minister The Hon. Andrew Holness, Sunrise Airways, the Pegasus Hotel management, and the Student Association President in Jamaica. Hourly communication has been established with students to monitor their safety and needs.

Two strategic options are being pursued: evacuation as the primary choice, with transfer to the Pegasus Hotel as a backup plan for student safety and comfort.

The Prime Minister has also instructed Ambassador to Cuba to make all necessary preparations for students there.

“Let us continue to keep all our students in our thoughts and prayers as we work diligently to ensure their protection and well-being,” Dr. Drew stated.

The government is closely monitoring Melissa, expected to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane over the weekend, with particular concern for CARICOM partners in Haiti.
