Senator Dr. Hon. Bernicia Nisbett Pledges To Serve The People Of The Federation

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 9, 2020 (ZIZ): The newly appointed Senator and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Hon. Bernicia Nisbett has pledge to serve the people of St. Kitts and Nevis as she embraces her new role.

Dr. Nisbett, recently served as the district medical officer responsible for providing medical services to the communities of Parson’s Village to Newton Ground.

Following her swearing in on Tuesday, she said she has always been motivated to serve.

“ Using my field as a medical doctor, I like to serve. I have been serving the community for almost two years and I go beyond and above for those patients in that community because I just love to serve and help people and taking this opportunity, it would then help me to serve St. Kitts on a wider capacity. It would help me to help the people of my nation, to help build my nation,” she said.

“I take this opportunity because I don’t want to just reach out to just the community, I want to reach out to everybody.”

Senator Nisbett said while she was not always politically motivated, she has been inspired by former Deputy Speaker and newly elected member of cabinet Hon. Akilah Byron Nisbett.

“If you had asked me five years ago, maybe ten years ago, ‘Would you see yourself as a politician or would you see yourself in the National Assembly?’ I would have told you ‘No’ because that wasn’t my aspiration,” she noted. “When I saw Hon. Akilah Byron Nisbett, the moment she got into parliament, I started admiring her and she gave me this zest, this motivation, this aspiration, ‘If Akilah can do it and she’s young and female, I can do it too!’ So I guess that’s where this motivation comes from.”

She further thanked the Team Unity administration for the support that has been offered to her in this capacity.

“I want to thank the Team Unity Government for selecting me, for having that confidence in me. So I just want to say thanks to the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, everyone who supported the cause for me to be here today,” she noted.

“I promise you I will do my best and whenever I need help, yes I will ask, but I will do my best to serve the people of St. Kitts and Nevis in my capacity.”
