SKNOC continues training programme

ZIZ News…Dec 11, 2012 — The St Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee has provided yet another training opportunity for one of its affiliate members. Last Saturday, 8th December, 2012, Track and Field Coach Timothy Morton and two (2) Under 15 Track and Field athletes namely Dimitri Browne and Curvis Collins, departed the Federation for Grenada to participate in a one week intense hurdles training programme.

The training programme held under the auspices of the Association of National Olympic Committees of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (ANOCES) is being coordinated by Mr Alwyn Babb out of Barbados. The ANOCES was founded with vision that small island states like the O.E.C.S region must collaborate more often to realise sustainable development as the best means of effectively utilising their limited resources in sports to compete on a global stage.

The SKNOC utilised its affiliation with the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) recently, when Mr Adolphus Jones, Physical Education Teacher at the Saddlers Secondary School represented the Federation at a seminar staged by CANOC on December 3rd and 4th in Kingston, Jamaica on the theme Promoting the value of Physical Education and Sport for Healthy Lifestyle and Social Development. The workshop saw varying presentations by a vast cadre of knowledgeable lecturers and experts who delivered and generated enthusiastic involvement of all of the participants in exciting discussions. There were several major issues that emerged and recommendations made for moulding the development pathway of the National Olympic Committees of the sub-region.

However, the most fundamental topic covered was the role of Physical Education and Sport in the fight against non-communicable diseases in the Caribbean and the importance of research in this field. In other related SKNOC news, the SKNOC is currently collaborating with two of its Member Federations in hosting two Olympic Solidarity Coaching courses. The basketball Level /Intermediate coaching course will run over the period November 17th to December 10th, while the IAAF Athletics Level 1 Coaching Course will be held from December 7th to 16th, 2012. Both courses cater for a total of 24 coaches at a cost of approximately U.S $12,000 each.
