The young parliamentarians debated a resolution to adopt the federal crisis and disaster management protocol to include economic diversification; and a resolution calling for a referendum on the change of the voting system from First Past the Post to Proportional Representation.

The Resolution on Crisis Management was moved by Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Hasani McDonald and was seconded by Minister of International Trade, Hon. Chadi Garnette.

The Resolution to change the voting system was moved by Leader of the Opposition Hon. Mauriel Knight and seconded by Deputy Leader of the Opposition Hon. Malaeh Erskine

In a first past the post electoral system, voters cast their vote for a candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins however, in a proportional representation system the overall percentage of the votes won relates to the percentage of the seats in parliament.

The SKNYPA Youth Parliament forms part of the official Independence 37 activities and the association’s 19th anniversary.
