St. Kitts and Nevis hosts 13th Meeting of the Caribbean Fisheries Forum

St. Kitts and Nevis, through Minister of Agriculture Hon. Eugene Hamilton has assumed the chairmanship of the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) Ministerial Council.

Succeeding hon. David Osborne of Montserrat who could not be in attendance due to health reasons, Minister Hamilton is serving as chairman of the 13th Meeting of the Caribbean Fisheries forum which is being held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort from June 13th to 14th.

The CRFM Ministerial Council is the highest decision making body on fisheries consisting of 17 member states with ministers responsible for fisheries and aquaculture matters serving on the council.

Noting that he accepts the position as chairperson of the Council of Ministers with pride, Minister Hamilton reminded the participants of the importance of the two day meeting.

Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture in the NIA Huey Sergeant said food security will be at the forefront of the council’s deliberations.

Speaking on behalf of the outgoing chair, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture in Montserrat Eulyn Silcott- Greaves outlined the significance of the Fisheries Sector across the region.

During the Caribbean Fisheries Forum the Ministers will review the report of the 17th Meeting of the Crfm Forum, the technical body of the CRFM, which was held at the Bird Rock Beach Hotel from march 20 to 21, 2019. These ministers will also collaborate on creating and implementing guidelines to improve the quality of the fish being harvested, enhance the safety and livelihoods of fishers, and boost the sustainability of the fisheries industry.
