St. Kitts and Nevis saddened by earthquake disaster in Japan

TAIPEI, TAIWAN, MARCH 12TH 2011 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said he is “deeply saddened by the news of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that wreaked havoc on Japan, with resulting structural damage and loss of lives.”

“Indeed the enormity of the devastation has shocked the international community. On behalf of the Government and people of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, I extend deep sympathy and condolences to the Government and people of Japan at this time and especially the families who have suffered losses in the wake of these natural disasters,” said Prime Minister Douglas in a message of condolence to his Japanese counterpart, His Excellency Naoka Kan.

Dr. Douglas pointed out that as a coastal state in the Caribbean, the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is cognizant of the heightened vulnerability to disasters of this nature and stands in solidarity with the Government of Japan and all of the Japanese people “in your moment of tragedy.”

He told Prime Minister Kan that as he begins the “tedious process of evaluation, search and rescue and recovery, I have no doubt that the level of preparedness that continues to be a model for the international community and, especially for us in the Caribbean region, has lessened the deleterious impact of this phenomenal earthquake of unprecedented magnitude.”

“The tangible show of goodwill of the Japanese Government with whom we continue to enjoy close relations and partnership is evidenced by institutional strengthening initiatives and infrastructural development through viable assistance programmes that have positively impacted our own national development efforts over the years. Notwithstanding our limited resources, we stand ready to support you in whatever way possible,” said Dr. Douglas.

“We will keep you in our prayers and will join the other Member States of the Eastern Caribbean sub-region, as well as those of the wider Caribbean Community in rallying around your country and people, our beloved friend and ally, as we endeavour to see you through this catastrophe buoyed by resilience and perseverance for which the Japanese people are renowned,” the St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister said as he expressed “our heartfelt and deepest sympathies and reassurances of our highest consideration at all times.”
