St. Kitts Hosts E-Commerce Law Workshop

BASSETERRE  — The Ministry of International Trade, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Digital Legal Taskforce and the Digital Transformation Unit (DTU), convened a validation workshop on the National E-Commerce Legislation Gap Analysis on Monday at the National ICT Centre.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from across sectors to review and refine the legal and regulatory framework for e-commerce in St. Kitts and Nevis, as part of the government’s digital transformation agenda.

Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy, Utilities, Domestic Transport, ICT and Post, The Hon. Konris Maynard, said the engagement is aimed at strengthening the country’s approach to digital trade.

“I am pleased to be participating in the Validation Workshop on the National E-Commerce Legislation Gap Analysis,” Maynard said, noting that the initiative is led by the Commonwealth Secretariat with regional support.

He added that collaboration with partners remains important to the process.

“I extend sincere thanks to the Commonwealth team and our regional partners for their continued collaboration and technical support,” Maynard said.

The minister said the workshop provides an opportunity for stakeholders to contribute to strengthening the national framework.

“This engagement brings together key stakeholders to strengthen the legal and regulatory framework for secure, inclusive, and competitive e-commerce in St. Kitts and Nevis,” he said. “Together, we are shaping a future-ready digital economy for our Federation,” he said.

The workshop follows a national stakeholder consultation held in November 2025, which began a comprehensive review of the Federation’s e-commerce legislation. That consultation involved public- and private-sector representatives, civil society groups, legal experts and regional agencies.

Officials have identified several priority areas for reform, including legal recognition of electronic transactions, consumer protection, data privacy, cybersecurity, electronic payments, intellectual property and cross-border digital trade.

Authorities said the review aims to align national laws with international standards and support the development of a modern digital economy. The process is also expected to guide the drafting of updated legislation and policy reforms to improve trade competitiveness and expand opportunities for businesses
