St Vincent and the Grenadines observes national day of mourning

Kingstown, St Vincent — On Thursday, St Vincent and the Grenadines officially mourned the loss of at least five young lives in what has become known as the Rock Gutter tragedy.

A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said that cabinet had declared January 22 a national day of mourning for those persons who lost their lives as a result of the tragic accident on January 12

Flags continued to fly at half-mast and media houses were asked to play appropriate music during the period.

On Monday, January 12, a minivan carrying 21 persons veered off the road and plunged into the sea shortly after leaving the northern village of Fancy en route to Kingstown.

Five children died while two more remain missing.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are now underway to try to secure the early release from prison in Martinique for the father of the two brothers who died in the Rock Gutter tragedy.

According to I-Witness News, the father of brothers Jamalie and Jamall who died in the tragedy is now serving a 15-month prison sentence in Martinique after he was convicted of illegally entering the country.

The situation has been especially hard on Jemma Edwards, the mother of the two sons, according to Gonsalves.

He was speaking at a media event where a gospel CD entitled The Healer was launched to raise funds for the victims of the tragedy and their families.
