Taiwan Navy Visit Marks Historic Moment in Enduring Friendship

Basseterre — Prime Minister  The Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew has described the arrival of the Taiwan Navy training squadron as a “historic moment” that reflects the strength and warmth of the long-standing relationship between St. Kitts-Nevis and the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Speaking at the official welcome ceremony this morning, Dr. Drew noted that this is the first visit by the Taiwanese naval squadron in 23 years. The mission brings over 700 officers, crew members, and midshipmen on a goodwill training voyage.

“For more than four decades, St. Kitts-Nevis and Taiwan have shared an exceptional partnership,” the Prime Minister said. “Taiwan was among the first countries to recognise our independence in 1983, and that friendship has grown steadily through solidarity, development, and people-centred progress.”

The relationship has delivered tangible benefits across key areas including healthcare, agriculture, education, climate resilience, technology, and broader national development projects. Dr. Drew emphasised that the bond goes beyond government agreements — it is rooted in shared values, mutual respect, and strong people-to-people connections that continue across time and distance.

This visit strengthens diplomatic ties at a time when the Federation continues to advance its Sustainable Island State Agenda. Taiwan has been a consistent and sincere partner, supporting initiatives that directly improve the lives of Kittitians and Nevisians.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of tomorrow’s public **Open Day** at Port Zante, Pier 2 (10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), where visitors can board the vessel, meet the crew, and learn about naval training and maritime culture. A special live performance will follow on Bay Road near Rams from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

For many families, this historic return of the Taiwan Navy is more than a ceremonial event — it symbolises reliable international friendship and continued support for our nation’s growth and resilience. As Dr. Drew highlighted, such partnerships help build a stronger, more prosperous Federation for every citizen.

The visit reaffirms St. Kitts and Nevis’ commitment to meaningful global cooperation that delivers real, lasting benefits to our communities.
