Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 19, 2019 (ZIZ News): The Economic Impact that limb amputations have on Social Security was one of several topics of discussion on the ZIZ radio program Health Matters on Friday.
Limb amputation in St. Kitts is common among persons affected by Non-Communicable diseases like diabetes.
While appearing as a guest, Public Relations Manager from the St. Kitts and Nevis Social Security, Kamilah Lawrence says that Social Security has recorded an increase in cases of invalidity and or disability from persons with diabetes. In many of these cases, these individuals experienced amputations due to the extent of the disease.
She said in 2018 more than 200 females and over 90 males filed for invalidity and disability from Social Security due to amputations.
She said sick leave is extensive for up to 26 weeks before becoming invalidity or disability cases.
She said however, many persons are misusing their social security and explained that after you’ve used all of their sick leave from the doctor and your case transforms into a disabled case, it does not mean permanent.
Lawrence said too often persons try to manipulate the system and commit acts of fraud that can sometimes lead to punishment by law. She also reminded that the loss of body parts like fingers and toes does not constitute for permanent unemployment.
During the show it was confirmed that although there was a spike in the number of persons filing for Social security due to amputations, there has been a decrease in amputations that remove the entire leg and thighs.
