The significance of the Buckley’s Uprising

Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 30, 2020 (ZIZ News): On Tuesday, during the commemoration ceremony of the 85th anniversary of the Buckley’s Uprising held at Buckley’s Estate, Director of Culture, Troy Mills questioned if enough was being done on an individual level to commemorate the event.

He was speaking on behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Shawn Richards.

As a people as a human being are we doing enough to ensure that these brave men and women… their fight, their struggles, their battles were not in vain. I don’t believe so.”

Persons were heard in the audience calling for the men and women involved in the uprising to be made national heroes and Mr. Mills explained that there is a process.

There is a process and it starts with you. The government cannot do everything and obviously everything takes time, everything cannot be done in one day.”

Mr. Mills expressed his disappointment at the sale of the Buckley’s site noting that some persons years ago did not see the necessity or the importance of the Buckley’s Estate.

The 85th Anniversary of the Buckley’s Uprising was guided by the theme “Buckley’s Uprising St. Kitts birth place of Caribbean Democracy”.
