Tourism Minister Celebrates Independence at Ade’s Place

Tourism Minister and Constituency #2 The Hon. Marsha Henderson joined staff and trainees at Ade’s Place last week for a patriotic programme marking St. Kitts and Nevis’s 42nd Independence Anniversary.

The visit highlighted the government’s commitment to inclusive celebrations, ensuring all citizens participate in national milestone events regardless of ability or circumstances.

During the patriotic programme, Minister Henderson emphasized the importance of unity, cultural pride, and community involvement in nation-building. The event showcased how organizations like Ade’s Place contribute to the Federation’s social fabric and progress.

“This engagement underscored the government’s commitment to fostering a sense of belonging across all communities,” officials noted, recognizing Ade’s Place’s valuable role in strengthening social cohesion during the independence celebration.

Established in 2005 by a concerned parent, Ade’s Place serves as a safe haven for adults with disabilities, filling a critical gap in community services. The facility was named after Ade Chaderton, who passed away in 2005. Born with Cornelia De Lange Syndrome, Ade was among the first trainees when the center opened.

The facility operates under a volunteer board, with the Ministry of Education providing daily meals for trainees. Since 2017, Ade’s Place has been integrated into the national Skills Training Empowerment Programme (STEP), currently supporting 20 trainees.

Ade’s Place offers extensive life skills training including:

  • Art and craft activities
  • Socialization skills development
  • Daily life training and survival sessions
  • Independent living skills
  • Ironing and computer training
  • Sporting activities
  • Community outings
  • Income-generating activities
