Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 24, 2021 (SKNIS): Several students from the Cayon Primary and Cayon High School will participate in an environmental and sustainable livelihood camp as part of the National Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Project.
“As part of this particular project, we are going to have an environmental and sustainable livelihood camp with young persons from the Primary and Cayon High School,” said Telca Wallace, Project Coordinator for the MAB Project, during her March 24 appearance on ‘Working for You’. “Cayon High School has a number of persons who are MAB Ambassadors, so we already have them on board in terms of the conservation and in terms of environmentally-friendly practices and so this sustainable livelihood camp would expound on what is already going on.”
Mrs. Wallace expressed thanks to Dr. Joyelle Clarke and Markysa O’Loughlin for working to prepare the ambassadors.
“They [MAB Ambassadors] now would be the team leaders for the camp because they have been part of that system for a few years so we can now incorporate some other young persons into that MAB ambassadorship,” she said.
Dorothy Warner, Secretary-General of St. Kitts & Nevis National Commission for UNESCO, said that teaching young people to care for things is important. She added that the camp initiative is a great one and that more schools will be contacted to join.
“We are also reaching out to the other schools to give us a few of their young people so we can spread the word around St. Kitts and Nevis –different high schools, everybody comes together – taking them up into the terrestrial zone, showing them quite a number of relics from the historical period of the machinery,” said Mrs. Warner. “They can go up and learn about these things—the windmills, visit the farms, and become enthused about the work of the biosphere reserve.”
]]>Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 25, 2021 (SKNIS): During the radio and television show ‘Working for You’ on March 24, the UNESCO National Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Committee officially launched its new project ‘Clean-up of the Cayon River/Ghaut, Hermitage & Keys Bay Areas.’
The UNESCO funded project is critical to the sustainable development platform, which is to protect and preserve the Water Resource in the St. Mary’s Biosphere Reserve, specifically, the Cayon River, Hermitage, and Keys Bay areas, said Dorothy Warner, Secretary-General of St. Kitts and Nevis National Commission for UNESCO and Telca Wallace, Project Coordinator for the MAB Project, who appeared on the show.
“UNESCO is front and center on the promotion of Biosphere Reserves, livelihoods, development, and sustainability,” said Ms. Warner. “We even talk about Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #6 where we talk about clean water and sanitation. So, the better we can protect the watercourse, we would have clean water and we would have proper sanitation.”
She added that this ties in with UNESCO’s mandate to ensure ecological balance.
“So, this project, the cleaning up of the Cayon River and of the Hermitage Estate and Keys Bay Areas, they all tie into UNESCO’s plan for a healthy world,” she said.
According to Mrs. Wallace, the project will start from the top of the river so that there will be no debris left in the waterway. She added that education and sensitization of the community will be a part of the project.
“The community is not the only culprit in terms of the indiscriminate disposal,” she said. “So we want to do a whole national campaign to keep our waterways clean, and cease and desist from putting things into the water that would harm us and generations to come.”
Several committees have been deployed to execute the project including the Agriculture Committee, Media Committee, Education Committee, Tourism Committee, and the Environmental Committee.
Mrs. Wallace said that after the project, it is hoped that the community will become more aware, vigilant, and protective of the area.
Mrs. Warner made an appeal to the general public and residents of St. Mary’s Biosphere Reserve to partner with the MAB Committee in the roll-out of the project.
“Learn as much as you can about your history, your heritage, the environment so that you can be somebody that can help us to conserve, preserve and protect the environment for generations yet unborn,” she said. “We want to protect the biodiversity.”
The Community Sensitization Town Hall Meeting to discuss a clean-up initiative will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, at the Cayon Community Centre at 5:30 p.m. The project will run from March to November 2021.
]]>BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, March 15, 2021 (MMS-SKN) — The appearance of Covid-19 forms part of what Jesus taught about the end times, and a leading cleric is saluting the leadership of the government of St. Kitts and Nevis, and the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) for the way they have gone about in keeping the pandemic at bay.
“I am declaring unto you that you must not make the mistake and see Covid-19 as simply a virus because Jesus declared before His coming there will be signs and one of the signs which He says, will be pestilences, and pestilences that come with contagious and deadly disease,” stated Reverend Dr Ben Browne of the Cayon Church of God on Sunday March 14 as he delivered the morning worship sermon under the theme ‘Signs of the times’ whose topic was ‘The signs are signalling… Don’t miss the signal’.
The man of God advised the congregation that included Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris and Ambassador His Excellency Michael Powell, to look at what Covid-19 is doing by making people unemployed, causing all kinds of hardships to the people, has restricted the movements, has killed thousands, has frozen nation after nation, and it has made life miserable all over the entire world.
He however advised that all was not doom and gloom as God has promised grace and mercy to His people, explaining that what ‘grace’ does is that it allows God to do for the sinners some marvellous things, while on the other hand ‘mercy’ is God’s way of withholding from the people what they deserve in terms of judgement.
“Oh for the mercy of God, we need to give praise and thanks,” said Dr Browne. “When I look at how this pandemic is ravaging the economies of the countries around the world, and how it is destroying life after life across the region here as well, and across the other nations of the world, when I look at what this thing is doing and when I see what is happening to us here in this Federation, I have got to give some praise. I have got to give some thanks and some blessings to God.”
Added Dr Browne: “Oh yes I praise God for the leadership of the Government, and I praise God for the leadership of the NEOC (National Emergency Operations Centre) that is behind and above the government and above NEOC is this wonderful God whom we serve, who gives us His grace and I hear the Prophet Jeremiah saying, it is because of the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed.”
The Cayon Church of God demonstrated its commitment in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic by hosting a Covid-19 vaccination information session from 6:00 pm that was facilitated by General Surgeon Dr Natalie Osborne under the theme ‘Getting vaccinated against Covid-19…Should I take it or should I not’.
“We know what is going on right now in the world – the pandemic and we know there are fears and so to allay those fears, we asked Dr Natalie Osborne to come and seek to address some of the issues that we may be having,” said chairperson of the evening session, Mrs Rosel Pemberton. “We here at the Cayon Church of God we firmly believe in a holistic development – we don’t just try to feed the spiritual side.”
Dr Osborne, who said she is a daughter of the Green Valley community and a daughter of the small area of Central Cayon, thanked the Cayon Church of God for giving her the opportunity to speak at the church that evening.
“My concern and our concern in the Ministry of Health is as we know that we have been dealing with for over the last year, the coronavirus, the Covid-19 pandemic, which started back in December of 2019 in Wuhan, China, and was officially labelled by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a global pandemic in March of 2020,” said Dr Osborne. “I am here just to enlighten you a bit about the vaccine and why we all should be vaccinated. Once there isn’t any major health counter-indication we all should get vaccinated so that we all move forward together in a unified manner and move past this vaccine.”
Giving the vote of thanks, after a highly interactive information session that also included person online and where persons were advised that the vaccine was safe to be used by persons in the ages 18 to 80, Ms Jamillah Bristol remarked that the presentation was very informative as Dr Osborne removed the medical terms and she brought it down to their level.
“Because I myself have a scare and I have read the negative things (about the vaccine) and I haven’t taken it as yet because of the fear and the negative things, I am grateful you encourage me and you persuade me to go and take my vaccine tomorrow morning,” stated Ms Bristol.
Reverend Dr Ben Browne said he was also going to take his vaccine the following day at the Cayon Health Centre and not at the New Town Community Centre where everyone is going.
]]>St. Kitts and Nevis is now offering the Oxford University/AstraZeneca Vaccine at the Newtown, Basseterre, Tabernacle, Sandy Point, Old Road, St. Paul’s, and Cayon Health Centres at 1:00 p.m. daily from Monday to Friday.
This was mentioned by Dr. Delores Stapleton Harris, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health on the most recent edition of Leadership Matters.
Dr. Stapleton Harris said that the 1:00 p.m. daily vaccination is a strategy to ensure that all public health services are provided during the morning period and there is focus on the COVID-19 administration during the afternoon.
She said that by this week, the ministry will be building out the vaccination at all eleven (11) health centers in St. Kitts, said the permanent secretary.
The permanent secretary said that persons are expected to complete a checklist prior to receiving the vaccine to ensure that they are suitable for it and to provide data for tracking the vaccination administration.
The vaccine will not be given if the person is allergic to any of the ingredients in the vaccine and like any other drug, a history of allergic reactions to any other vaccine or therapies must be reported to the health care provider, she said. She added that pregnant women and lactating moms are excluded from the vaccine.
]]>BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, March 1, 2021 (MMS-SKN) — Federal Minister of Health the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett is assuring the nation that the Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 Vaccine being rolled out in the country is safe and that the Indian company making it is a world-leader in vaccine production.
“The vaccine is safe,” said Health Minister Byron-Nisbett. “We won’t tell you that it is safe if it wasn’t so. I want to encourage everyone to go out and get vaccinated.”
The Hon Byron-Nisbett, who is also the Minister of ICT, Entertainment, Entrepreneurship and Talent Development, made the remarks on Saturday February 27 when she addressed participants of Prime Minister’s Monthly Health Walk who had assembled at the Ottley’s hardcourts at the end of the walk.
“Serum Institute of India is producing the most AstraZeneca Oxford vaccinations that are being distributed throughout the world,” advised the Honourable Minister. “The AstraZeneca Oxford brand would not have asked Serum Institute to make the vaccine for them if they did not believe that they were capable of doing so. So there is no need to fear that the vaccines are from India. That has nothing to do with whether or not the vaccine would do what is expected to do.”
According to the Hon Byron-Nisbett, roughly 90 percent of the vaccines made in the world are from the Serum Institute of India. She advised the audience that many of the vaccines they received as children, and those now being received by their children are made from the Serum Institute of India.
The information session on the vaccine rollout, which was held at the end of the walk, was also addressed by Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Dr Delores Stapleton-Harris, National HIV/AIDS Programme Coordinator and Health Educator Dr Mathias Afortu-Ofre, medical practitioners Dr Dail Crawford and Dr Leroy Richardson, and District Medical Officer Dr Bernicia Nisbett who is also the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.
“I had my shot – everybody saw that – on Monday and I am still feeling good,” commented the Hon Byron-Nisbett. “There is no reason not to take the vaccine – we have more reasons to take it than not to take it.”
Members of the audience at the Ottley’s hardcourts were told they have an option, not to take the vaccine and get Covid-19 and risk having severe Covid-19 and possible death, or to take the vaccine and would not have severe Covid-19 nor would they die from Covid-19. She advised them to register under the tent that had been set up on the hardcourts and make an appointment to take the vaccine.
“The Ministry of Health will never tell anyone to take it if we do not believe it to be safe,” pointed out the Honourable Minister of Health. “The Prime Minister would not have taken it if he did not think it would be safe. We would not have allowed the Prime Minister take it if we did not believe that it was safe. So the fact that the Prime Minister took the vaccine the Ministry of Health endorsed that it is safe for our Prime Minister, the leader of this country to take the vaccine. That means you too can take the vaccine.”
Two members of the public Mr Eldon ‘Big T’ Harris, and Mr Damien Weekes who had already taken the vaccine testified that it did not have any notable effect on them.
Health centres on St. Kitts offering the vaccine, according to Hon Byron-Nisbett, are Basseterre, New Town, Sandy Point, Tabernacle, Cayon, and Molineux, while St. Peter’s Health Centre would be added to the list in the week starting Monday March 1.

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 3, 2021 (SKNIS): St.
Delores Stapleton Harris, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, who appeared on the virtual forum “Leadership Matters” on March 02, 2021.
“As such, the ministry is encouraging persons who are interested in the vaccination to go to the nearest health center and make an appointment for the vaccine,” she said.
By next week, the ministry will be building out the vaccination at all eleven (11) health centers in St. Kitts, said the permanent secretary.
“So just walk in, be vaccinated, or make an appointment to do so,” she said. “I remind you that the vaccine is free of cost.”
The permanent secretary said that persons are expected to complete a checklist prior to receiving the vaccine to ensure that they are suitable for it and to provide data for tracking the vaccination administration.
The Oxford University/AstraZeneca Vaccine is administered by medical practitioners as an injection of 0.5mls into the deltoid muscle of the upper arm in two doses, informed Dr. Stapleton Harris. The second dose is given 10 weeks after. She noted that it is important to return for the second dose to complete the vaccination process.
The vaccine will not be given if the person is allergic to any of the ingredients in the vaccine and like any other drug, a history of allergic reactions to any other vaccine or therapies must be reported to the health care provider, she said. She added that pregnant women and lactating moms are excluded from the vaccine.
After the vaccination is received, persons are asked to wait 15 minutes to monitor for the occurrence of any immediate adverse reactions, and a vaccination record card or certificate would be stamped and issued to the person, and should be secured safely by the individual, said the permanent secretary.
Upon receiving the vaccine, persons will be told possible side effects to look for and a contact number to call to report side effects as they occur, she said.
“Therefore, I submit that the process is seamless, and I can assure the public that all relevant logistics and storage chains are in place for the vaccine as well as an established mechanism to track and trace all doses of the vaccine as they move through the system,” said Dr. Stapleton Harris.

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 31, 2020 (SKNIS): The Explorers Youth Clubs now have a permanent place to call home following the official opening of their headquarters in Phillips Village.
The new 10,420 sq. ft building was opened by Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. The Honourable Timothy Harris, at a ceremony on Thursday, December 31, 2020. It was built by M&D Construction at a cost of $2.47 million. It features a number of amenities for the members of the twelve Explorers Clubs across St. Kitts. Each club is expected to have weekly sessions there when the threat of COVID-19 ends.
Project Engineer, George Gilbert of the Public Works Department, congratulated Myron Percival and his company M&D Construction for the excellent work in building the facility. Mr. Gilbert said that the sleeping rooms with accompanying bathrooms for males, females, and staff will allow camping events. Also featured are a recreation room, offices, a common dining room and kitchen, and a laundry area. There are three 500 gallon water storage tanks on the roof.
In giving remarks, Prime Minister Harris referred to the incredible growth of the Explorers Movement, which started in July 2017 with the launch of the Mol-Phil group. Since then, other communities have joined including Tabernacle, Shadwell, Cayon, Newtown, Lodge, Old Road, Dieppe Bay, St. Peter’s, St. Paul’s, Trinity, and Newton Ground.
Dr. Harris said that there are over 1,200 hundred explorers and he expects the numbers to continue growing as other communities have signalled an eagerness to establish clubs.
“This is a legacy development in the context of law and order in our country,” the prime minister stated. “This is a legacy initiative that generations after us will speak to as being an important stabilizer of our society and contributing to the advancement of St. Kitts and Nevis.”
He added that the government remains committed to the empowerment of young people as well as the rule of law within society. This is reflected in the record amounts allocated to related ministries for the 2021 fiscal year.
The Ministry of National Security was allocated over $86.1 million. The Ministry of Education received over $103 million, while the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture was allotted over $10 million.
Prime Minister Harris appealed to parents, businesses, and other stakeholders to join with the government in building a stronger and safer future for all.
]]>Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 23, 2020 (SKNIS): Postal Services play a vital role in connecting people, businesses, and governments globally. As such, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Infrastructure, Posts, et al., the Honourable Shawn Richards, said that the postal system in St. Kitts will be digitized in 2021 to improve services.
“We are looking at the digitization of the Postal Services for customers utilizing the services offered by the various post offices throughout St. Kitts,” said Deputy Prime Minister Richards on Tuesday’s (December 22) edition of ‘Leadership Matters’, a virtual forum on ZIZ TV. “We intend to digitize it to the extent that persons are able to get receipts digitally and basically, all operations of the post offices will be done digitally.”
Minister Richards said that currently almost every service offered at the post offices is done manually. However, in 2021, the aim is to work to ensure that the ease of doing business is facilitated.
“During the course of 2021, we hope to change,” he said. “We have already identified a software developer right here within the region that we will be commissioning at the post offices around St. Kitts.
Equally important, Deputy Prime Minister Richards said that cluster boxes will be offered to several houses through communities in St. Kitts and Nevis. The decision was reached because postmen accessing homes within communities encounter difficulties in doing so, be it because of dogs or where the houses are built.
“That will make the service far more efficient, not only for the customers of the post office but also for the hardworking staff of the post office,” he said. “We also intend to evaluate the services by the General Post Office to see how we can improve the services offered.”
There are six post offices across St. Kitts. These are located in Sandy Point, Old Road, Dieppe Bay, Tabernacle, and Cayon. The General Post Office is located in Basseterre.
The mission statement of the Postal Service is “We are committed to the provision of consistently high quality of affordable postal products and services to satisfy the varied requirements of our valued customers in an efficient and professional manner.”
]]>Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 16, 2020 (SKNIS): The construction sector in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis continues to record positive growth and served as a growth driver for the first quarter in 2020, said Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris.
“The construction sector continues to provide employment for many of our citizens and residents. It is the primary source of income for many families. This sector is quite resilient, and my government will continue to make the necessary investments to further enhance that resilience, and transform the economy,” said Prime Minister Harris during the tabling of The Appropriation (2021) Bill, 2020, on Tuesday, December 15 at the St. Kitts Marriott Ballroom.
Prime Minister Harris said that in 2019, the sector grew by 1.8 percent. This, of course, “was primarily due to an increase in the contribution of locally financed construction activity coming from the public and private sectors,” he added, noting that projects such as the Rehabilitation of the Island Main Road, “of course, have made significant contributions to achieving the positive growth outturn.”
Although COVID-19 would have interrupted the construction works, Dr. Harris said that the good news is that at the end of November 2020, approximately 78 percent of the work in Segment two, which extends from Saddlers to Challengers and stretches from the Camps roundabout to the Airport roundabout via Cayon Street and Wellington Road, was completed. The project is anticipated to be fully completed by 2021.
Segment one of Phase two, which encompasses the road network extending from Saddlers to Cayon, was completed in December 2019.
Dr. Harris said that the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is committed to exploiting the benefits accrued from an efficient system.
“Our major investment in improving our road network brings into perspective the Government’s vision of a modern St. Kitts and Nevis and the transformative impact of resilient public infrastructure. The efficiency gains from a reliable road network and the resultant enhancement in the quality of life in our communities are well known,” said the prime minister. “Mr. Speaker, one component of our road network which bears mention is the careful insertion of sidewalks and lanes. This, of course, has brought a sense of pride and excitement to our people.”
Dr. Harris said that to date, the government has spent EC $55 million on the project.

Molineaux/Cayon Cricket Club (MCCC) are back to back Keeth Arthurton T20 Champions after a six-wicket win over Sandy Point on Sunday at the Conaree Cricket Center.
MCCC won the toss and invited Sandy Point to have the first knock. The opening pair for Sandy Point Dillin Liddie and Greg Stanley got their innings off to lively start taking 25 from three overs, but when Liddie fell after trying one shot too many fell for 12.
Stanley and Akeem Saunders tried to get the innings back on track but after a partnership of nine Stanley was bowled by MCCC Captain Larry Audain for 18.
Saunders was then joined by Terrance Warde and the experienced pair found it difficult to find scoring options early on especially to Leon Clarke playing his final game for Molineaux/Cayon.
Clarke Bowl his four-over for just 12 runs and got the important wicket of Saunders.
However, Warde kept the Sandy Point innings alive playing an important knock of 49 not from 42 balls as he was patient during the difficult periods and stroke some lusty blows later on as he pushed his team to 115 for 5 from their 20 overs.
Needing 116 for victory, Molineaux/Cayon got off to the worst possible start losing opener Leroy Maynard to the second ball of the innings for two and Christanja Carey and Jaeel Clarke found it difficult to put the ball away in the early overs of the power play.
When Jaeel smacked Elvin Berridge for 14 runs in his first over the tide started to swing in favour of MCCC.
Jaeel, who was the leading run-scorer in the competition smacked 29 from 25 balls and to help lay a foundation with Carey following the early wicket. When he was dismissed Sandy Point knew that wickets were their early route back into the game and when for aggressive field placings to Audain and Carey.
However, Carey found his stride and took a liking to Warde’s bowling smashing him for three massive sixes and a four en route to 39 from 43 balls. He however was caught looking to end the game quickly.
Captain Audain and the experience Jacques Taylor saw the game home in the 18th over with Audain finishing not out on 28.
In the end, MCCC also swept the post-tournament prizes with Audain being named man of the match and Taylor being named man of the series with 128 runs and 12 wickets.
MCCC finished the tournament undefeated and also walked away with the $2500 cash prize. While Sandy had to settle for $1500.
Larry Audain following the game told the audience that he was pleased with his team’s performance throughout the tournament.
“I think we played some good cricket throughout the tournament and to do it undefeated I think it was a great achievement for our young squad.”
He also explained that the team was confident going into the finals to beat a strong Sandy Point side stacked with first-class cricketers.
“We were confident heading into this match, playing collectively as a team I think we stood a better chance. Yes, they have three first-class players, but we would always back ourselves to come out trumps.”

]]>Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 23, 2020 (ZIZ News):National Disaster Coordinator, Abdias Samuel says St. Kitts fared well during the passage of Tropical Storm Laura on Saturday.
On Sunday Mr Samuel told ZIZ that there were no reports of damage to homes, no injuries and no deaths.
He said there were reports flooding in parts of the Old Road Bay Road, the loss of electricity in several areas and of downed trees in Cayon and in several communities in Nevis, which have since been cleared.
Tropical Storm Laura passed closest to the federation between Friday night and early Saturday morning with wind speeds of about 45 miles per hour.
]]>Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 23, 2020 (ZIZ News):
A senior official of the National Emergency Management Agency is praising the quick action of Cayon residents who responded to the damages caused by the passage of Tropical Storm Laura on Saturday in their area.
ZIZ News caught up Deputy National Disaster Coordinator, Claricia Langley Stevens in Water Works on Saturday where she said a large Sandbox Tree said to be more than 200 years old was blown into the road near the Anglican Church cemetery, damaging power lines and blocking traffic.
Mrs Langley Stevens said before she even arrived on the scene the residents were already out clearing the area and using tools to break down the tree to get it out of the road.
She commended their quick action.
“I am particularly impressed because the community did not wait for first responders,” she said. “They started using their own tools and equipment to start cutting the tree into pieces to get it out of the roadways and their making tremendous success.”
Mrs Langley Stevens said the tree reportedly fell at about 2 am and the residents were in action just after the all clear at 6 am.
The District Manager, police officers, SKELEC and The Cable representatives were also on site making assessments and repairs.
The tree was removed and the flow of traffic resumed by Saturday evening.
