Cayon Salvages Draw in Finals Showdown Preview

BASSETERRE – Azul Cayon Rockets and Development Bank St. Peters fought to a dramatic 1-1 draw Wednesday at the National Bank Group Technical Center in a playoff encounter. The result set up a crucial final round of matches where Cayon will face undefeated Old Road United Jets in what amounts to a finals preview, while St. Peters battles Newtown United in a match where the Development Bankers must win to keep their championship dreams alive.

Malik Hendrickson broke the deadlock in the 77th minute to give Cayon the lead, but St. Peters responded with characteristic resilience when Rocco Browne equalized just five minutes later in the 82nd minute, denying the Rockets what would have been a crucial three points in a match with enormous playoff implications.

For the second-placed Rockets, the draw proved both a relief and a missed opportunity. After claiming a decisive 1-0 victory over Newtown United in their opening Final Four match with Mervin Lewis scoring in the 20th minute, Cayon found themselves unable to capitalize on Wednesday. The result leaves Cayon with 4 points from two matches and facing an intimidating encounter with Old Road. Old Road remains undefeated and are on course for a historic treble after dominating the regular season and winning the 2026 FA Cup.

St. Peters, meanwhile, salvaged their playoff campaign with their first point of the Finals, though their path to the championship final remains perilous. St. Peters finished fourth on the regular season points table with 31 points but have struggled through the playoff stage. In their opening Final Four match against Old Road, St. Peters mounted a spirited second-half effort but fell to a 1-0 defeat complicated by a 23rd-minute red card to Lyndon David for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. That early dismissal forced St. Peters to defend with 10 men for the majority of the match, making Wednesday’s draw against Cayon a significant achievement.

Wednesday’s encounter remained scoreless through a tightly contested first half, with both teams exercising the caution characteristic of playoff football. Neither side could break through the opposing defense during the opening 45 minutes, and the pattern continued until Cayon found their opening in the 77th minute with Hendrickson’s breakthrough goal.

Cayon’s lead proved short-lived, however. St. Peters responded within five minutes through Browne to level the match and deny the Rockets the victory that would have positioned them strongly ahead of their meeting with Old Road..

Looking ahead, Cayon’s next assignment represents the most significant remaining playoff test. As the second-place finisher from the regular season with an 11-1-6 record and 34 points, Cayon earned their place as strong challengers to Old Road’s dominance. However, facing the undefeated Jets who have not conceded a goal through their two playoff matches while scoring four will test Cayon’s attacking prowess against the most formidable defense in the competition.

St. Peters chances of reaching the finals have dimmed considerably following their opening playoff loss and lack of victory in two matches. Though mathematically alive, the Development Bankers must overcome Newtown United, who have struggled through the playoff stage having failed to score while conceding four goals in their two matches. Even a victory over Newtown would likely leave St. Peters dependent on other results to advance.

Disciplinary action came throughout Wednesday’s encounter, with four yellow cards issued across both sides. Kandre Wattley received a caution for Cayon in the 26th minute, while St. Peters saw yellow cards shown to Devion Harvey in the 28th minute and Kalani Heyliger in the 51st minute. Mervin Lewis received a caution for Cayon in the 84th minute.

The match was overseen by Referee Kareem Benjamin with assistance from linesmen Jaden Rouse, Tyra Wilkinson and Shandor Wilkinson. Reserve officials Stephan Smith and Makeyla Audain stood ready, while Steadroy Douglas served as Referee Assessor and Lydia Hanley as Match Commissioner.

The final round of matches will determine which two teams advance to the 3-match series championship finals. Cayon and Old Road will provide the competition’s marquee fixture, while St. Peters faces a do-or-die encounter against Newtown in what could be the Development Bankers last chance to reach the promised land.
