President of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association, Mr. Auckland Hector, has offered heartiest congratulations to Leeward Islands Under 17 player – Zubin DEYAL – who was successful in passing an astounding 16 subjects at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC).
Commenting on Deyal’s achievements, President Hector said: “It just goes to show that cricket is not a distraction and, youngsters who have proper time management along with the hard work that is required can enjoy success both academically as well as in their sport of choice.”
Zubin wrote 16 subjects at CXC and passed 13 Grade 1 (10 with Distinction), and three (3) Grade 2. While attending the St. Joseph’s Academy, Zubin still found time to represent his school in cricket, football, and volleyball. He also played basketball and tennis at House Level and was on his school’s debating team, College Quiz team and competed in athletics during inter-schools’ competition. Zubin also represented Antigua in Swimming before giving it up to fully concentrate on cricket.
Speaking following the announcement of the results, Deyal said: “I was overcome with joy after hearing my CXC results.” He said that his “persistent hard work and dedication” had paid off, leaving him “thoroughly satisfied.” Zubin has represented Antigua in cricket at Under 13, Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19 levels. He was awarded the prize of “Most Economical Bowler” in the 2013 WICB Under 17 tournament in Tobago. That same year, he was also the most successful bowler from Antigua in the Garfield Sobers Under 19 International. He plays club cricket for the New Winthropes Cricket Club in Antigua.
Zubin is hoping to be admitted to the University of West Indies, Cave Hill campus to pursue a BSc. Programme, where he would have access to cricket facilities and opportunities. He encourages other aspiring student/athletes to manage their time efficiently, work hard with a single minded approach and be completely self-confident.
Deyal plans to excel at the highest level for West Indies. He is looking forward to representing the Leeward Islands Under 19 team next year, with the intention of playing for the West Indies Under 19 at the 2016 ICC Youth World Cup in Bangladesh. He hopes that he could one day lead and inspire the West Indies team to dominate international cricket.
