Nevis High Schools perform creditably in Inter High Championships

Sports Page — The annual Inter-High Schools’ Championships were held in St. Kitts from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd March.

Almost 100 of Nevis’ finest young athletes from three Secondary schools participated in the event.

The three schools were: Charlestown Secondary; Gingerland Secondary and Nevis International High School, which was participating for the first time.

Prior to departing Nevis, Coach at the Charlestown Secondary School, Garfield Virgo indicated that he expected the athletes to perform creditably and on his return to Nevis on Monday, stated that they certainly did not disappoint.

The Charlestown Secondary school placed 4th overall and the Gingerland Secondary School placed sixth overall, securing 4 golds; 2 silver and 1 bronze medal.

Included in the medals was gold by top Javelin thrower, Adrian Williams and Sadiki Tyson won class champion honours in the under 17 boys category.

The Nevis International High School secured two bronze medals for their outstanding efforts.

Izaun Ward established a new record in the 800 meters event and is now the national junior record holder in that event. Ta’j Liburd also established a new record in his 800 meters event as well.

The overall placements of the Secondary Schools based on the medal count were as follows:

Charles E Mills – Champions — 30 gold; 22 silvers; 23 bronze; a total of 75 medals

2nd Washington Archibald High – 17 gold; 18 silvers; 13 bronze

3rd CFBC – 11 gold; 5 silvers; 4 bronze

4th Charlestown Secondary – 9 gold; 15 silvers; 11 bronze

5th Verchilds High – 8 gold; 12 silver; 11 bronze

6th Cayon High – 7 gold; 5 silver; 5 bronze

7th Basseterre High – 6 gold; 11 silvers; 16 bronze

8th Gingerland Secondary – 6 gold; 1 silver; 5 bronze

9th Immaculate Conception Catholic School – 1 gold; 2 silvers; 1 bronz

10th Saddlers Secondary – 4 silvers; 3 bronze

11th Nevis International – 2 bronze medals

12th AVEC – 1 bronze medal
