Special Education Unit hosts Annual Sports Day

We already know that they are a determined human beings who strive to overcome on a daily basis  and this resolve was even more evident as the athletes at the Special Education Unit, braved the inclement weather to complete the various races at the their annual sports meet which was held at the school’s ground on Monday 24th February.

Headmistress Mrs. Violet Clarke indicated that two other schools had partnered with her school in showing solidarity with the children under her care.  They were the Ivor Walters Primary and the Elizabeth Pemberton Primary Schools which sent their coaches to assist with the organization of the meet and also had a contingent of athletes to participate in the various events.

There was an official march past; the singing of the national anthem, led by one of the students and prayer.

The children then engaged in various races which included the book race; tyre race; dress up race; building blocks; fishing race; medley races and relays.

The top three placers in each event received medals.

Assisting in distributing the medals were the Junior Minister of Sports Mrs. Hazel Brandy-Williams and Asst. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development, Ms Michelle Liburd.

The top athletes at the end of the meet were as follows:

1st Place – Letisha Davis……31points

Joint 2nd Place – Soranlli Zacarias and Jilano David …..17 points

Joint 3rd Place – Ulano Smithen and Tonya Cornelius….13 points.

Mrs. Clarke noted that the layout of the school creates a number of challenges but is hoping that by next year they will have a proper athletic field where everyone can enjoy the activities in greater comfort.
