St. Kitts and Nevis Explores Food Security Ties with Taiwan

Basseterre — St. Kitts and Nevis is actively seeking new partnerships to strengthen food security and reduce its heavy reliance on food imports.

His Excellency Ambassador Donya L. Francis recently led a delegation to Taiwan, where they toured the production facility of the I-Mei Foods Nankan Factory in Taoyuan City in Taiwan. The visit focused on practical areas where the Federation can learn and adapt systems for local benefit.

Officials examined food processing techniques, quality control measures, sustainable production methods, and the company’s innovative system for treating and reusing wastewater in agriculture. These insights are expected to support efforts to boost local food production and build greater resilience in the national food supply.

The engagement forms part of a wider government push to form strategic international partnerships that can help lower the food import bill and improve long-term self-sufficiency.

For families across St. Kitts and Nevis, stronger local food systems mean more reliable access to fresh produce, potential new jobs in agriculture and processing, and reduced vulnerability to global price shocks and supply disruptions.

Further discussions and possible collaboration agreements are anticipated in the coming months as the government continues to explore opportunities that deliver practical benefits to residents.
