2012 Basketball Season Officially Launched: Hitters and Ghaut Bucs lose season-openers

Basseterre St. Kitts, 2nd April 2012 – St. Kitts Amateur Basketball Association (S. K. A. B. A.) held its opening ceremony at Basketball City, Victoria Road under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency, The Governor General Sir Cuthbert M. Sebastian, GCMG, OBE. Also present were the Deputy Prime Minister and former Minister of Sports Sam Condor, Mr Dave Connor, Director of Sports and representative for the Minister of Sports, who was unable to attend, Mr Alphonso Bridgewater and Mr Glen Jeffers, President and General Secretary of the National Olympic Committee respectively, Ms Khalia Huggins Sugar Mas National Queen, Ms. Siobhan Phipps Digicel Haynes Smith Miss Caribbean Talented Teen, Digicel Marketing Executive Ms Marsha Lindo and invited honourees.

On the occasion, Vice President of SKABA, Dr. Garfield Alexander chaired and reiterated the commitment the 2011-2012 executive pledged to the fans, players and teams of this organization. The invocation was given by resident minister Brandon Grayson. President of SKABA, Mr Kenroy Tobias addressed the ceremony, extending a warm welcome to the teams and clubs and re-capping the events of the 2011 National League. Mr. Tobias stated his obligation to the sport of basketball was not only to the players but to the fans and spectators. He highlighted the initiatives of the executive committee to improve the grounds, keeping them clean and maintained, and also ensured that his experience as a referee dictates his campaign to ensure that the 2012 season is disciplined and efficiently structured. Mr Dave Connor formally opened the 2012 season and commended the efforts of the new executive; this was followed by the presentation of the 2012 teams; greeted and congratulated by Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Sam Condor, the Carnival Queens and representatives from the Sports Department and the N. O. C.

The National Carnival Queen and Caribbean Talented Teen charmingly presented, commendably individuals of the sport with certificates of appreciation. Mr Livingston ‘Dunta’ France, a past player was applauded for his contributions to basketball over the years. Mr Glen Jeffers as a Supporter and Contributor and Mr Charles Morton as a former Administrator were also presented with certificates. Amongst other individuals celebrated were Mr James ‘Barman’ Hanley, Ms Yvette Taylor and Mr Juslyn Daniel for the invaluable contributions as Administrators. Mr Ramesh ‘Sabo’ Walters and Ms Averille McKoy were amid the honourees as players and the St. Kitts Bottling Company Ltd. as a long-time sponsor of the league mainly the Junior Division.

The Opening Ceremony was immediately followed by 2 exciting match-ups in which Challengers Exodus out-played Rams Hitters and Fig Tree impressed to beat defending Champions Ghaut Bucs.
