Regional Director conducts Special Training Course

Mr. Marc Mercadante, Regional Director of Special Olympics in Connecticut, visited Nevis on Friday 15th November to conduct a training seminar.

The seminar which was conducted at the Nevis Sports Department which is located at the Reliable Motors Complex, catered to Sports Officers at the Department and also personnel from the Special Education Unit located at Prospect.

He focused on such areas as coaching techniques, especially as it related to dealing with Special athletes. The session was very interactive with the participants asking questions and making relevant inputs.

Mr. Mercadante was due to conduct a similar course in St.Kitts the following day.

Mercadante, who has a background in Physical Education and athletic training, first came to the Federation of St.Kitts and Nevis in 2011 on a partnership program to help the St.Kitts-Nevis Special Olympics team to grow and develop.  He came with a team 20 athletes and their family members for a one week acclimatization visit.   They used the time learning the local culture and even participated in the national Special Olympics games. He commenced working in Special Olympics in 1985 as a volunteer.

While on Nevis,  Mercadante donated some well needed sports equipment and took note of the needs of the Special Olympics committee in the Federation and will address these issues with his organization in Connecticut with a view of assisting the local committee and athletes.

He will also be writing a proposal for a grant on behalf of the local Special Olympics committee.

‘What the St.Kitts-Nevis Special Olympics do is very important and I hope that the community will support them,’ he said.
