St Vincent PM tries to head off teachers strike

Kingstown, St Vincent — Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves has issued another appeal to teachers and public servants in St Vincent and the Grenadines not to withdraw their services on Tuesday.

The Public Service Union and the Teachers Union, the two main trade unions representing public servants, said that they still intend to stage a one-day strike to press the government to pay workers one month’s salary tax free.

Addressing supporters at a Unity Labour Party rally on Sunday night, the prime minister urged teachers and public servants to rethink their decision about the strike action.

The prime minister also said that he is willing to meet with the executive of the trade unions for further discussions on the issue.
