37 Years: Douglas Still Standing, Still Fighting

BASSETERRE — The Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Llewellyn Douglas marked a remarkable milestone on Saturday, March 21st — 37 unbroken years as Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #6, encompassing Newton Ground, St. Paul’s, Dieppe Bay, Parsons, and Saddlers/Harrises.

Douglas, who currently serves as Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, Industry, Commerce, Consumer Affairs, Economic Development and Investment, first won the seat on March 21, 1989 — in an election where the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party secured only two constituencies.

Reflecting on the anniversary, Douglas said: “I was subsequently sworn in to serve the people of Newton Ground, St. Paul’s, Dieppe Bay, Parsons, and Saddlers/Harrises — a responsibility I have carried with humility, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to national development.”

Since that first victory, Douglas has successfully contested eight consecutive general elections — 1993, 1995, 2000, 2004, 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2022 — making him one of the longest-serving parliamentarians in Caribbean history.

His tenure includes 20 years as Prime Minister from 1995 to 2015, during which his Labour Party swept all eight Kittitian seats in the 2000 general election — a feat rarely seen in Caribbean democracy. That dominance cemented his legacy as the longest-serving prime minister in the English-speaking Caribbean and the Commonwealth.

“To my Constituents, I extend my profound gratitude for your steadfast confidence and support in every election cycle since that time,” Douglas said in a statement marking the occasion.

Born in St. Paul’s — the very village at the heart of his constituency — Douglas trained as a medical doctor before entering politics. He served as CARICOM’s spokesman on HIV/AIDS and Non-Communicable Diseases, earning recognition from former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Since the Labour Party’s return to power in August 2022, Douglas has resumed a senior Cabinet role, continuing a political journey that began over three and a half decades ago.

“May God continue to bless our beloved Federation,” he said.
