BHS Heritage Week Celebrates Culture, Pride

Basseterre High School’s “Treasures of Our Heritage” week drew students and staff into a vibrant celebration of Caribbean identity — crowned by a standout Bantu Knots competition.

BASSETERRE: Students and staff at Basseterre High School last week transformed their campus into a living showcase of Caribbean heritage, wrapping up a five-day cultural celebration that school officials described as “unforgettable.”

Themed “Treasures of Our Heritage – Honouring the Past, Shaping the Future,” the week-long series of events was organized by the Social Sciences Department, opening Monday with a special assembly and guest speaker Ms. Elise Harry, whose presentation set the tone for a week of reflection and cultural pride.

“The pride and spirit of our heritage continue to shine brightly throughout our school community.”

Wednesday’s Cultural Attire Mufti Day drew widespread participation, with students and teachers dressing in traditional wear from across the Caribbean and beyond — turning the school grounds into a tapestry of colour and diversity.

The most anticipated event of the week was Thursday’s Strands of Our Heritage: Creative Bantu Knots Competition, pitting year groups against each other in a celebration of African-rooted hairstyling artistry. Forms 1, 3, 4, and 5 all competed, with the 4th Form team claiming top honours.

The competition was made possible through the sponsorship of Ms. Jackie Bryant, whom the school publicly thanked for her generous contribution. The week closed Friday with a Cultural T-Shirt Day, Food Festival, live entertainment, and a Lucky Dip — a fitting finale to a week of cultural celebration.
