Drew Champions Climate Justice at United Nations
UNITED NATIONS – Prime Minister The Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew delivered a compelling address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2025, urging global leaders to prioritize climate justice for small island nations like St. Kitts and Nevis. His speech, which has garnered international applause, highlights the federation’s vulnerabilities while showcasing the Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA) as a blueprint for resilience.
Drew vividly described the climate crisis’s local impact.
“We are a people who measure time not by years alone but by storms,” the Prime Minister said. He called for transforming global capacity into compassion, stating, “Change the calculus of comfort for the calculus of climate justice.”
Central to the address was SISA, a 2040 vision built on seven pillars like energy transition and water security. Projects such as the 70,000-gallon solar desalination plant and geothermal drilling in Nevis demonstrate practical steps toward self-sufficiency, potentially creating jobs and reducing energy costs for residents.
On gender equality, Drew noted Parliament’s record female representation.
“When women lead, nations rise,” Drew said. He endorsed the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) for fairer financing and the Bridgetown Initiative for debt reform, emphasizing their role in protecting locals from economic shocks.
Globally, he advocated for UN reform, Haiti support, ending Cuba’s embargo, and Taiwan’s inclusion.
For St. Kitts-Nevis residents, this positions the federation as a sustainability leader, attracting international aid and fostering community resilience amid hurricanes.
