Flights to the Caribbean Cancelled
BASSETERRE: Travelers heading to and from St. Kitts face major disruptions today as the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (RLB) experiences flight cancellations and delays due to emergency airspace restrictions imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The St. Christopher Air & Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) confirmed Saturday that while airport operations remain ongoing, flight activity is currently being impacted by a developing situation affecting regional airspace. RLB is among 19 Caribbean destinations affected by the FAA’s sweeping restrictions, which were issued overnight in response to U.S. military operations in Venezuela.
Airport Operations Continue with Flight Disruptions
In an official travel advisory SCASPA stated that it is monitoring the developing situation in collaboration with relevant authorities and airline partners. The Authority confirmed that an active Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) issued by the FAA indicates that US-registered aircraft will be affected.
“Select services, including flights operated by Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, have already been cancelled at RLBIA,” SCASPA announced. The Authority strongly encouraged passengers to contact their respective airlines directly for the most up-to-date flight information and to confirm flight details before traveling to the airport, as schedules are subject to change with limited notice.
The FAA issued emergency notices prohibiting U.S. airlines from operating in large sections of the Eastern Caribbean due to safety risks from ongoing military activity. The restrictions have brought air travel in the region to a near standstill during the busy post-holiday travel period.
Major U.S. carriers including American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, United, and Southwest have cancelled flights across the Caribbean, affecting Puerto Rico, Aruba, Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua, and multiple other islands. JetBlue reported cancelling 215 flights systemwide across the Caribbean.
