Kittitian Tennis Star Earns Prestigious College Award
BASSETERRE — Jayda Browne, a sophomore tennis player from Saint Peter’s is making her homeland proud on the courts of the United States, earning Washington College’s Shorewoman of the Week honour — her first career recognition of its kind.
The Washington Archibald High School graduate, now competing for Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, went 2-0 in singles during a standout weekend that cemented her growing reputation in the Centennial Conference.
In a closely contested 4-3 victory over the Catholic University of America on Saturday, Browne delivered the match-clinching win, defeating Marcela Pena 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 singles position. The following day, she kept her momentum rolling against Stevens Institute of Technology, defeating Kaylee Hobbick 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in a hard-fought three-set battle.
The recognition caps an impressive season for the Kittitian athlete, who has posted an 8-9 singles record and a 6-4 doubles record this year. Browne also won six consecutive doubles matches between March 26 and April 24 — a run that underscores her consistency and competitive drive. She was also named to the 2025 Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team, a testament to her character both on and off the court.
Browne joins a growing list of St. Kitts and Nevis athletes excelling at the collegiate level in North America, bringing visibility to the twin-island Federation on an international sporting stage.
