Man Dies After Drowning at Herbert Beach
CHARLESTOWN – Police are investigating the apparent drowning death of a 30-year-old Nevis man who went missing while swimming at Herbert Beach on Thursday afternoon.
Jahi Henry of Webbe’s Ground, Nevis, was swimming with a friend between 1 and 1:30 PM on January 2 when he appeared to encounter difficulties in the water.
The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force reported that Henry’s friend attempted to assist him and bring him safely to shore but was unsuccessful. The friend eventually reached the opposite side of the beach where he sought help.
Police immediately requested support from multiple agencies, including the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force Coast Guard, local divers, fishermen, and other emergency responders.
Shortly before 3 PM, Coast Guard officers located Henry unresponsive in the water offshore near the Medical University of the Americas.
Despite efforts by Coast Guard officers and emergency medical services personnel to resuscitate him, their attempts were unsuccessful. Henry was later pronounced deceased at the Alexandra Hospital.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the precise cause of death.
The incident marks a tragic start to the new year for the Nevis community. Authorities have not indicated whether rough sea conditions or other environmental factors may have contributed to the drowning.
The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
