Minister Mourns Teen Killed During Carnival
BASSETERRE – Minister Samal Duggins has issued a statement expressing condolences following the death of eighteen-year-old Kaden Hanley during last lap carnival celebrations.
Hanley, of Shadwell Estate, St. Kitts, was killed at the conclusion of the festival’s celebrations, marking a tragic end to what is traditionally a joyous cultural event.
“At just eighteen years old, Kaden had his entire future ahead of him,” Minister Duggins stated. “His passing is a profound loss, and my thoughts and prayers remain with his family and all who are mourning during this difficult time.”
The Minister, who holds responsibility for the creative economy and carnival, reflected on the somber reality that has cast a shadow over the celebrations.
“Carnival is meant to celebrate life, culture, and togetherness,” Duggins said. “Moments like this remind us of the fragility of life and the responsibility we share to look out for one another—in our celebrations and beyond.”
In his statement, the Minister called on residents to honor Hanley’s memory through unity and compassion.
“Let us honour Kaden’s memory by choosing love over conflict, care over indifference, and togetherness over division,” he urged. “Hold your loved ones close, check in on one another, and never take a single moment for granted.”
Minister Duggins concluded his message with prayers for the grieving family: “May Kaden rest in peace, and may God grant comfort, strength, and peace to all who grieve his loss.”
