Ministry of Health Takes Action on Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Reports

BASSETERRE: The Ministry of Health has confirmed the identification of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) cases at two pre-schools in the Early Childhood Sector in St. Kitts.

HFMD is a common viral illness primarily affecting young children, known for its ease of transmission in group settings such as schools and daycare centers.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that HFMD is generally mild but can cause discomfort including symptoms such as fever, sore throat, painful mouth sores, rash on the hands, feet, or buttocks, loss of appetite, and irritability, particularly in infants and toddlers. Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to be vigilant and monitor their children for these symptoms.

To control the spread of the infection, the Ministry of Health is working closely with the Ministry of Education and has provided affected schools with guidelines on infection prevention and control. These measures include frequent handwashing with soap and water, especially after diaper changes and before meals, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and thorough cleaning and disinfection of toys, furniture, doorknobs, countertops, and electronic devices using bleach-based solutions.

Parents are urged to keep symptomatic children at home and seek medical advice if symptoms do not improve or worsen. Public cooperation is crucial in mitigating the spread of HFMD within communities.

The Ministry of Health calls on the public to maintain good hygiene practices and report suspected cases to school administrators or local health authorities promptly. Continued updates will be provided to ensure residents are informed and prepared.

This proactive response highlights the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and the wellbeing of children throughout St. Kitts and Nevis.

Residents are reminded that with communal awareness, vigilance, and adherence to recommended hygiene practices, the spread of HFMD can be effectively managed and minimized.
