PM Drew Cancels Gala Appearance Amid Venezuela Crisis
BASSETERRE: Prime Minister The Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew cancelled his appearance at Saturday evening’s Grand Gala as he continues leading regional diplomatic efforts following the US military capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
“Serious events unfolded earlier today in Venezuela and, having assumed the Chairmanship of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on January 1, I have been and continue to be engaged in discussions with colleague Heads of Government, regional leaders and the CARICOM Secretariat,” Drew stated in an evening message.
The Prime Minister assured citizens he would “continue to work in the best interests of our people and country” as CARICOM assesses “potential implications for our region and the well-being of our people.”
Drew convened an emergency meeting of Caribbean Heads of Government hours after US forces struck Venezuela early Saturday morning. CARICOM expressed “grave concern” about the situation and its “possible implications for neighbouring countries.”
Opposition Leader Hon. Mark Brantley spoke with the Prime Minister Saturday morning and pledged his support. Brantley noted that both Venezuela and the US “have been longstanding friends of St. Kitts and Nevis,” expressing hope that “hostilities will cease immediately and that diplomacy will be given a chance.”
The operation, codenamed “Absolute Resolve,” began around 2:00 a.m. with strikes on military installations across Caracas. President Trump announced America will temporarily “run the country” until a safe transition occurs. Maduro faces narcoterrorism charges in New York.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the action “a dangerous precedent.” Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister clarified her nation was “NOT a participant” in military operations, while Argentina’s president celebrated Maduro’s capture.
