SKN Joins Vibrant CARIFTA Opening Ceremony

LE LAMENTIN, Martinique — The 39th CARIFTA Aquatics Championships officially commenced Friday night at Stade Georges-Gratiant, as St. Kitts and Nevis joined 23 other Caribbean delegations in a ceremony blending high-level protocol with regional culture.

The event, which returns to Martinique for the first time since 2016, features more than 500 swimmers competing over six days. Following the traditional march of athletes, the ceremony featured addresses from regional sporting and government officials, including CARIFTA Aquatics President Stéphane Joachim and event patron Coralie Balmy.

“CARIFTA is often the first big stage for these young people,” Balmy said. “It’s where they become aware of their level.”

The cultural program highlighted the shared heritage of the archipelago, featuring steel pan performances and Tanbou Bo Kanal drumming. Martinican artist Paille performed a set of soca and dancehall, performing in both English and French to engage the diverse international crowd.

Bénédicte Di Geronimo of the Martinique Tourism Committee noted the event’s role in regional connectivity, stating that sport “creates emotion and makes people want to discover Martinique.”

With the ceremonies concluded, the focus shifts to the Pierre-Samot Aquatic Center for four days of pool events. The St. Kitts and Nevis team began their competitive campaign Saturday morning, with the championships set to culminate April 8 with the five-kilometer open water race at Les Anses-d’Arlet.
