St. Kitts Advances Blue-Green Economy

BASSETERRE: St. Kitts and Nevis is paving the way for sustainable development through the Clean and Healthy Ocean Integrated Program, a five-year GEF-funded initiative. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Marine Resources, alongside The Nature Conservancy and partners, hosted an Inception Workshop to kickstart the project.

The event validated the Year 1 workplan and budget while finalizing project design and timelines. Key focus areas included strengthening partnerships for better waste management and ecosystem protection, addressing marine hypoxia and nutrient pollution from agriculture and wastewater.

“Through strengthened collaboration and strategic planning, the Ministry and its partners are advancing a balanced approach to economic growth — protecting both land and sea while building long-term resilience,” a media release states, highlighting the most significant claim of a self-reinforcing cycle for healthier ecosystems and economic opportunities.

This GEF-backed effort, managed by the Food and Agriculture Organization, supports national ocean policy and marine management plans. It promotes nature-based solutions, policy reforms, and private sector involvement to curb land-based pollution.

“Together, we continue moving forward on a sustainable blue-green pathway for St. Kitts and Nevis,” the ministry emphasized. The initiative safeguards biodiversity, boosts tourism appeal, and fosters resilience against environmental threats
