Taiwan Embassy Celebrates National Day
BASSETERRE: In a display of enduring friendship and cultural exchange, the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) hosted a lively reception yesterday, October 9, to commemorate the 114th National Day of the Republic of China.
Held amid the lush surroundings of Palms Court Gardens, the event brought together dignitaries, community leaders, and residents to celebrate Taiwan’s founding while highlighting the deep-rooted ties between Taiwan and the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The festivities underscored the 42-year diplomatic partnership between the two nations, which began in 1983 shortly after St. Kitts and Nevis gained independence.
Ambassador Edward Tao opened the evening with welcoming remarks, likening the relationship to “fine rum—getting smoother and richer with time.” He expressed profound gratitude for the Federation’s unwavering support on the international stage, particularly in advocating for Taiwan’s participation in global forums like the United Nations.
Echoing these sentiments, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Llewellyn Douglas, Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, praised Taiwan as a “trusted and valued partner.”
He emphasized shared democratic values and Taiwan’s contributions to St. Kitts and Nevis’ development across key sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, and education. Minister Douglas reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to supporting Taiwan globally.
Guests were immersed in Taiwanese cultural traditions, featuring a dynamic Dragon Dance symbolizing prosperity and good fortune, the energetic Third Prince performance — a folk ritual invoking protection and joy — and a communal sing-along of “Happy Birthday” to Taiwan. These elements not only entertained but also served as a bridge between cultures, allowing locals to experience Taiwan’s rich heritage firsthand
