Ministry of Health is busy finalizing a national food dietary guideline

Nutritionist in the Ministry of Health is busy finalizing a national food dietary guideline, which is to be launched in the near future.

The recommendations in the dietary guidelines are for persons over 2 years of age and who are not suffering from non-communicable diseases.

An increase in non-communicable diseases has led regional governments through a multi-sectoral approach to develop ways of providing practical advice on eating healthy for proper nutrition and health.

The national food dietary guideline addresses just that.

Mrs Valerie Woods, is the nutrition surveillance coordinator who is spearheading the project.

She says continuing to emulate the American food pyramid is no longer relevant and is definitely out of the question.

Other islands are already sporting their guidelines. St.Lucia has chosen to depict theirs on a coal pot; St. Vincent on a bread fruit and the Bahamas on drums.

Mrs. Woods highlighted a few of the eight guidelines that would be illustrated on the national food pyramid.
