New Events for Sugar Mas 43
(ZIZ News) — The full list of activities for Sugar Mas 43 was officially released on Friday, with the addition of several new activities and the return of past events.
One of the events added to this year’s list is the official Sugar Mas 43 Church Service scheduled for Sunday December 7th.
Chairman of the National Carnival Committee, Sylvester Anthony outlined the return of a popular event.
“We are bringing back a show that we had, that was sponsored by the National Carnival Committee but for the last few years was done by the private sector people and last year it didn’t take place. At the request of many, we are reintroducing the Best of the Rest Calypso Monarch Competition and that will take place on Tuesday, December 16th,” he said.
Anthony also revealed the introduction of another event, this time one that targets the Nation’s Youth.
“Tuesday December 23rd, we have a Junior Calypso Monarch Competition together with a Youth Steel Pan Festival…we have seven steel bands, I think three out of Nevis and four out of St. Kitts. The competition will comprise two sections. One section will comprise of what we call the Big Band section, 15 members and the small one will consist of 5. So it’s two competitions,” he said.
The Minister responsible for Carnival, Hon. Marcella Liburd expressed her satisfaction with the addition of the new events, particularly the Youth Steel Pan Competition.
“I want particularly say how pleased I am as the Minister of Culture, that we are bringing back the steel pan and we are bringing it back with our youth. Long ago, the steel pan was the thing but now cannot afford to exclude it. We have to make sure that all of the music is included in our Carnival, including the steel pan. So whoever is responsible for bringing back the steel pan to Carnival, I want to give them congratulations and you see where we are going, strictly at our youth because we intend for this to be sustainable,” she said.
Other notable activities on the Sugar Mas calendar are the Soca Monarch Finals on December 19th, the Miss Talented Teen Pageant on December 20th, National Carnival Queen Pageant on December 28th, the Senior Calypso Monarch Finals on December 29th, and the Haynes Smith Caribbean Talented Teen Pageant scheduled for December 30th.
