OAS Awards 5 Scholarships for Graduate and Undergraduate Academic Studies

ZIZ News…Dec. 11, 2010 – The Organization of American States (OAS), through its Department of Human Development, Education and Culture (DHDEC), has awarded 5 scholarships to citizens of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, for Graduate and Undergraduate Academic Studies 2011/2012.

At the Master’s level and selected under the OAS-Placed Scholarship category are Mr. Steadroy Everly Pemberton, who would pursue his degree in Finance at an institution in the Caribbean or Canada; Ms. Charlene Bowry, who will write a Master’s Degree in Psychology with an institution in the Canada or the United States by way of distance learning; and Ms. Shara Karyn Maynard, who will pursue a Master’s in Tourism Promotion at a university in the United States, Canada or the Caribbean. Selected as a Self-Placed Scholarship candidate was Mr. Colin Connonier, who will pursue a Doctorate in Economics, at the Louisiana State University in the Untied States.

At the undergraduate level, Ms. Ghanja Karmena O’Flaherty was awarded a scholarship to write a Bachelor’s of Science degree, at Carleton University in Canada.

Speaking from his Office in Fortlands, the OAS Representative in St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr. Starret Greene said that his organization remained fully committed to helping the Government and People of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis strengthen their human resources given that an educated and trained citizenry was an essential ingredient in the process of building a vibrant and strong democracy, through sustained political, economic, social and cultural advancement.

Between 1985 and 2010, the Organization of American States has awarded approximately 155 academic scholarships at the graduate and undergraduate levels to citizens of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. Under its Professional Development Training Programme, the OAS also provides scholarships to candidates to pursue short term courses that are designed to strengthen their expertise and expose them to new trends and developments in their specialized line of work. Additionally, under the LEO S. ROWE FUND, the OAS provides interest free student loans for candidates pursuing academic studies, but only at universities on main land United States of America.
