‘Enduring Harmony’ Mural Transforms McKnight Steps

Leatherback turtle artwork symbolizes community resilience and protection

BASSETERRE – A striking mural of a leatherback sea turtle is being painted on the Durant Avenue steps in Central Basseterre, marking a significant cultural moment for the McKnight community.

Tourism Minister Hon. Marsha T. Henderson unveiled the project, named “Enduring Harmony,” describing it as more than decorative art. “The leatherback sea turtle is an endangered species that finds a safe haven to nest on our protected shores,” Henderson stated, drawing parallels between the marine creature and her constituents.

The minister emphasized that the turtle “embodies the qualities that define our community: wisdom, ancient knowledge, and the ability to persevere through challenging times.” The artwork’s symbolism extends to themes of protection, with Henderson noting that “the leatherback seaturtle’s hard shell symbolizes protection and security, providing a safe haven for those who need it.”

A second mural is planned for Thibou Avenue steps, featuring “Majesty,” a brown pelican representing “the enterprising spirit, national pride and prosperous future” of McKnight residents.

The initiative aims to foster community pride and unity. Henderson encouraged residents to “embrace personal growth, evolve, and find harmony and balance within ourselves, with each other and with our environment.”

Both murals are intended as “spirit animals” to watch over the community and create an atmosphere of peace and prosperity in Constituency #2.

The project represents a creative approach to community development, blending public art with cultural symbolism and environmental awareness.
