Mitcham scores 12 goals, wins MVP as Basseterre High defeats Cayon 2-1
BASSETERRE: Basseterre High School claimed the 2025 Under-14 Inter-Secondary Schools Football Championship with a 2-1 victory over Cayon High School on Wednesday at Warner Park before an enthusiastic crowd.
Peardrella Player of the Match Alijah Mitcham scored the decisive go-ahead goal to secure the title for BHS, capping a remarkable tournament where he netted 12 goals to earn both the Golden Boot and Most Valuable Player awards. A Cayon own goal provided Basseterre’s second tally, while Jahvon Monzac replied for Cayon in the close contest.
The championship match followed an entertaining third-place playoff that saw Charles E. Mills Secondary School edge Washington Archibald High School 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller. Jarrell Bowery scored twice for CEMSS, with J’Qimor Alford and Dejai Richards adding singles. WAHS received goals from Zavier Agard, Keiyon Agard, Keiyon Simmonds, and Sanjay Blake. Aden Prentice of CEMSS earned Player of the Match honours.
Basseterre High dominated the individual awards, with Taniel Hendricks named Most Outstanding Goalkeeper and Davonte Duporte claiming Most Outstanding Defender. Cayon’s Jonathan Sommersall was recognized as Most Outstanding Midfielder, while Charles E. Mills received the Fair Play Award.
The Department of Sports thanked Carib Breweries’ Peardrella brand for sponsoring Player of the Match awards, along with the Ministry of Education, SKNFA, media partners, and numerous volunteers who made the tournament possible.
The electric atmosphere at Warner Park showcased the promising young talent developing in the nation’s secondary schools.
