International Women’s Day celebrations

(ZIZ)– International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8th, will be commemorated this year under the theme “Inspiring Our Women”.

Director of Gender Affairs, Etsu Bradshaw Caines, says International Women’s Day, which was started by United Nations Women, is a day to celebrate the accomplishments of women.

“We celebrate the steps we have made forward in ensuring that our women’s problems are being addressed that we are advocating for our women. We know we’ve made strides with these things so that is what we try to do– to make people aware of what advances we have made in life,” she said.

According to Caines this year International Women’s Day will be celebrated with a march through the streets of Basseterre on Friday March 7 and a breakfast ceremony the following day.

“We will be showcasing women who have been inducted into our hall of fame here. Our women who we have honoured for their contributions to the community. We will be advocating for empowering our women, for keeping our families safe. We will also be showcasing our program which is called the Viola Program,” she said.

The ceremony takes place on Saturday March 8th at the Marriott Resort.
