Maurice Hillier Memorial Jr School opens Literacy Week of Activties

(ZIZ News) — The Maurice Hillier Memorial Junior School opened its Literacy Week of activities on Monday.

Students were seen showcasing their literacy themed t-shirts in various colors for the opening of their Literacy Week of Activities.

Principal of Maurice Hillier, Icilma Springer gave ZIZ news an overview of Monday’s activities.

“Today parents were involved in getting their T-shirts printed with different quotations of shoes. This week children along with their teachers are going to explore the shoes, things that can be done in shoes, discuss some Idioms and all of that”, she said.

ZIZ toured the school and noted that various classrooms were showcasing the many ways shoes were used while learning.

During the tour, the Principal explained that the word shoes was actually an acronym for the school’s theme for the academic year.

“The SHOES idea has come from our theme for the year which says ‘Students Having Opportunities for Excellence and Success’ so we have used the acronym and we came up with the word SHOES”, Springer explained.

She also explained that the students were given the opportunity to experience a tour outside the school grounds as well.

“Teachers and students participated and so today they read stories about shoes, they had songs about shoes, rhymes about shoes and as I mentioned earlier Grades 1 and 2 visited the shoe store and when they return they will have a journal entry about their visit to the shoe stores”, the Principal added.

The Literacy Week of Activities will include an Elocution Competition, a Spelling Bee and shoe Party, an Election Campaign and a Modelling event.

The Maurice Hillier Memorial School’s Literacy Week of Activities is being held under the theme, “Learning Is What We Choose, Getting Brighter In Our Fancy Shoes”.
