Podlofsky Ties Singles Record In Tennis’ 6-1 Win Over Bryant

AMHERST, Mass. – After dropping a pair of matches last weekend against Brown and Harvard, the UMass tennis team bounced back on Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 win over Bryant at the Bay Road Tennis Center. Senior Jessica Podlofsky tied the program’s record for career singles’ victories with her 67th putting her alongside Michele Spiess.

Podlofsky will have a chance to take sole possession on Sunday when the Minutewomen host Long Island (12:30 PM).

The Minutewomen won the doubles point thanks to tandems Yuliana Motyl and Arielle Griffin, and Chanel Glasper and Anna Woosleyin the No. 1 and No. 3 spot, respectively. The team also won 5-of-6 singles matches. UMass continued its home court domination, recording its 15th straight win. The last home loss for the Minutewomen came on Jan. 28, 2012 against Boston College.

The Minutewomen opened the afternoon winning the doubles point at the hands of No. 1 Motyl and Griffin 6-7 (1), 6-3 (11-9) and No. 3 Glasper and Woosley 6-0. Jessica Podlofsky and Aarzoo Malik made up the No. 2 doubles pair, posting an unfinished score of 3-3 to Bryant’s Rosie Bird and Briana Leonard. Malik competed in her first match of the spring season and first match ever playing alongside Podlofsky in doubles. The freshman previously competed with Motyl in doubles where the pair posted a 1-1 fall record.

UMass clinched 5-of-6 singles matches including a 6-0, 6-3 win from Malik in the No. 2 spot. Malik sparked the winning for the Minutewomen as the remaining No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 spots tallied singles victories in straight sets. No. 3 Podlofsky defeated Bird 6-1, 7-6, while No. 5 Woosley and No. 6 Glasper recorded 6-3, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2 wins, respectively, each for their first singles victories of the spring campaign.

The Minutewomen take the courts of the Bay Road Tennis Center again on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 PM where they hope to extend their perfect winning record against Long Island University to six matches.

Next weekend UMass will host another two matches beginning with Army on Friday, February 14 at 10:30 AM and Boston College on Sunday, February 16 at 12:30 p.m. After next weekend the Minutewomen will not return home for almost two months when they play A-10 opponent Saint’s Joseph’s on Friday, April 4.
