St. Kitts and Nevis Basketball Team off to Guadeloupe
BASSETERRE – The Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis (SOSKN) delegation left the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport on Thursday for Guadeloupe to participate in the first-ever Special Olympics Unified 3×3 Unified Basketball title.
The team is led by Coach Kenroy Tobias and Ms. Debra Matthew, SOSKN Board member, and features athletes A’Sharia Whyte, Mikhail Powell-Brazier, T’Shawn Carty, Tiana Hendrickson, and Tshawn Butler.
Guadeloupe host the first-ever Special Olympics Unified 3×3 Basketball Tournament in Basse-Terre from November 13–16, 2025.
This inaugural competition brings together mixed teams from across the region, all vying for the prestigious inaugural Special Olympics Caribben 3×3 Unified Basketball title.
The Unified Sports format is central to the competition, with each team composed of male and female athletes with intellectual disabilities playing alongside Unified partners (athletes without intellectual disabilities). This mixed format is designed to promote inclusion, teamwork, and social integration through sport.
Participating programs, fielding highly anticipated teams, include: Special Olympics Antigua & Barbuda, SO Barbados, SO Jamaica, SO St Maarten, SO St Kitts and Nevis, SO Trinidad and Tobago, and SO Guadeloupe.
Teams will participate in initial divisioning matches, which will ensure fair and competitive play as they advance to the main competition bracket.
The realization of this landmark event is a testament to strong regional collaboration.
Special Olympics St Kitts-Nevis extends its sincere gratitude to Special Olympics Guadeloupe and their Government for their unwavering support and commitment to this initiative.
Special thanks are also directed to Lorna Bell, Executive Director of the Special Olympics Caribbean Initiative, and the dedicated planning and management team for their efforts in bringing this vision to life and ensuring athletes are given the chance to compete and shine on the regional stage.
Special Olympics Caribbean Initiative supports programs across the Caribbean region to provide program development, year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Let’s us celebrate all the athletes participating and wish them success.
