Patriots Eliminated From Play-Offs After Tridents Loss

BASSETERRE — The Barbados Tridents boosted their play-off hopes with a four-wicket win over the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots at Kensington Oval in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL), a result that eliminates the Patriots from contention.

Chris Green led an excellent Tridents bowling effort that limited the Patriots to under 120, before Quinton de Kock extended his lead atop the tournament’s run charts with a classy unbeaten 44 to guide his team home.

Electing to bowl first, the Tridents made a blistering start. Green dismissed Johnson Charles with the second ball of the match and completed a wicket maiden in his first over, before Daniel Sams struck two balls later, with Kyle Mayers caught behind by de Kock. Green added another blow in the third over, bowling Andre Fletcher, leaving the Patriots reeling at 6 for 3. They ended the Power Play still under pressure at 21 for 3.

Gudakesh Motie joined the assault, removing Patriots captain Jason Holder after a handy 24. Wanindu Hasaranga provided some resistance with 45 off 25 balls before he was run out by Sherfane Rutherford in a brilliant piece of fielding. The Patriots rallied to 118 all out, losing their final wicket off the last ball of the innings. Green finished with figures of 4 for 20, while Sams and Motie claimed two apiece.

The Patriots’ bowlers came out firing in response. Holder dismissed Brandon King and Rivaldo Clarke inside the first over, then struck again soon after when Zachary Carter departed via a high catch from Hasaranga. The Tridents slipped to 38 for 3 in the Power Play, but with de Kock at the crease, control was never far away.

The tournament’s leading run-scorer showed his customary poise, guiding the chase at his own pace without ever looking troubled. He put on 38 with Shadrack Descarte and 39 with Rutherford to edge the Tridents toward the target. Mayers produced a spectacular reaction catch to remove Green, but Sams sealed the win with a six to finish the job.

The result eliminates the Patriots from play-off contention. The Tridents, meanwhile, move firmly into the mix with two more matches remaining in their home leg.
