Nu Vybes Reclaims Road March Crown
BASSETERRE: Nu Vybes Band International, led by the legendary Gregory “Mention” Hobson, has captured their sixth Road March title at Sugar Mas 54, ending a two-decade championship drought with their anthemic song “Home Coming.”
The victory proved historic in more ways than one. Nu Vybes tied with Kollision Band’s “TMI” at 259.5 points, marking an unprecedented dead heat in the competition. Under official tie-breaker rules, judges’ average scores determined the winner, with Nu Vybes ultimately claiming top honors.
“This one hits different,” organizers declared, noting how the crown “returns where it belongs” after twenty years.
Grand Masters secured third place with “Rock Steady,” scoring 256.85 points in what officials described as a “fierce showdown” and “nail-biting” finish.
The win represents a remarkable comeback for Nu Vybes, affectionately known as “De Sugar Band,” whose dominance once defined St. Kitts’ carnival sound. Their “Home Coming” anthem electrified streets from J’ouvert through the main parade, with organizers praising the “undeniable vibes” and “unmatched energy.”
“Road March is definitely back in style,” officials said, declaring Sugar Mas 54 as “the year the legends reclaimed their throne.”
Hobson, whose incomparable vocals have shaped generations of carnival music, now adds a sixth championship to his decorated legacy. The victory cements Nu Vybes’ status among the islands’ most successful carnival bands, proving their staying power in an increasingly competitive field.
Officials praised all competing bands for making Sugar Mas 54 “unforgettable.”
