BASSETERRE: The Ministry of Health has issued a public advisory as the Federation experiences increased respiratory illness activity during the current influenza season, with cases of flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) confirmed among residents.
“While there has been an increase in persons presenting with fever and respiratory symptoms, the majority of cases are mild and are being effectively managed within the health system,” the Chief Medical Officer’s office stated in Tuesday’s advisory.
Health officials are particularly concerned about vulnerable groups, including adults over 65, children under five, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, and heart disease. These individuals face higher risks of serious complications, including bacterial pneumonia and hospitalization.
The Ministry emphasized that vaccination remains the most effective protection against severe influenza complications. “The influenza vaccine is available at all of the health centres in St. Kitts & Nevis,” the advisory noted, encouraging high-risk individuals to get vaccinated immediately.
Residents are urged to practice hand hygiene, cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home when experiencing fever and respiratory symptoms. Anyone with severe symptoms—including difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, chest pain, or confusion—should seek medical attention immediately.
The Pan American Health Organization recommends prioritizing vaccinations for older adults, persons with underlying conditions, pregnant women, and frontline health workers to maintain essential services.
The Ministry concluded with a call for collective action: “Let us work together to protect the health and well-being of our people in 2026.”
