Litter Wardens Stop Illegal Dumping in Conaree

Conaree residents’ vigilance leads to intervention

BASSETERRE – The Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) successfully intercepted individuals illegally dumping waste in the Conaree community, thanks to swift reporting from alert residents.

Litter Wardens caught the offenders in the act, but when the individuals attempted to evade responsibility, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force was called in to provide reinforcement. Officers responded promptly to support the SWMC team on site.

The operation required assistance from SWMC Planning Manager Ms. Chantel Pemberton, who served as translator to ensure clear communication during the engagement with the offenders.

The SWMC publicly praised Conaree residents for their quick action in reporting the illegal activity. “Your vigilance plays a critical role in keeping our communities clean, safe, and respected,” the corporation stated in their social media announcement.

The incident highlights growing challenges with illegal dumping across St. Kitts and the importance of community cooperation in combating the problem. Proper waste disposal services are available through the SWMC, making illegal dumping both unnecessary and punishable.

The corporation encouraged continued public participation with their message: “See it? Report it. Let’s work together to protect the beauty of our island.”

This successful intervention demonstrates the effectiveness of collaboration between government agencies, law enforcement, and vigilant citizens in maintaining environmental standards and community cleanliness across the federation.

Residents are reminded to report any suspicious dumping activity immediately to help preserve the natural beauty of St. Kitts and Nevis.
