Douglas Champions Small States at London Talks

St. Kitts and Nevis foreign minister pushes for collective Commonwealth action and ensures every voice is heard during high-stakes London meetings.

LONDON – Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas arrived in London this week carrying a pointed message for the world’s largest political association: the Commonwealth’s 56-nation family must do more for its smallest and most vulnerable members.

“The Commonwealth must use its collective voice to advance the interests of its member states, particularly small and vulnerable states like Saint Kitts and Nevis,” Dr. Douglas said.

Speaking during a special retreat under the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting (CFAMM), Douglas also pressed for greater consultation and inclusivity, stressing that every voice around the Commonwealth table must be heard.

The CFAMM retreat was one stop in a three-day schedule of multilateral and bilateral engagements. Douglas also co-chaired the Twelfth UK–Caribbean Forum at Lancaster House alongside Rt. Hon. Yvette Cooper, UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs. Foreign Ministers from CARICOM and the Dominican Republic joined the talks, which centred on a Plan of Action to guide UK–Caribbean cooperation over the next two years across trade, security, and regional development.

Douglas is accompanied by His Excellency Dr. Kevin M. Isaac, High Commissioner, and Ms. Thouvia France, Counsellor at the Saint Kitts and Nevis High Commission in London — a delegation reflecting the Federation’s commitment to sustained diplomatic engagement on the world stage.
