Youth Economic Empowerment Bureau to Tackle Unemployment
Basseterre — Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has announced the creation of a new Youth Economic Empowerment Bureau as part of a major package of measures aimed at reducing the cost of living and creating real opportunities for young people.
In a national address on Tuesday, Dr. Drew described the bureau as a dedicated unit that will provide direction, training, and support to all young citizens.
“We will prepare our youth, reduce youth unemployment, and build social resilience from the ground up,” the Prime Minister said. “This is not a handout. This is a launch pad.”
The announcement forms part of broader relief efforts that take effect from April 20 through July 31, 2026, including a 50 percent cut in the excise tax on gasoline and other measures to ease financial pressure on households and businesses.
The new bureau is expected to focus on skills development, job placement, entrepreneurship support, and structured programmes that help young people transition successfully into the workforce. It will work across government ministries and in partnership with the private sector and community organisations.
For many families in St. Kitts and Nevis, youth unemployment remains a pressing concern. The establishment of this specialised bureau signals a clear government commitment to treating the issue with urgency and providing practical pathways for the next generation.
Residents can expect further details in the coming weeks on how the bureau will operate and how young people aged 18 to 35 can access its services.
This initiative complements the newly launched “Own Your Summer” programme, showing a coordinated approach to supporting youth both during the school break and throughout the year.
